AAAAAAAAH WE DID IT!!! ONLY 18 HOURS OF OUR LIVES SPENT ON THE ROAD 😅
Honestly, this was probably our smoothest road trip ever. Except for the part where we forgot to reengage the child lock, and Abby opened the window ALL THE WAY DOWN and then tried to beckon Cleo over while we were slowing down for a toll. I’m going to have night sweats thinking about how awful that could’ve gone, but are any of us surprised by Abby taking the chance to be an only child? I’m not.
I think the key to this particular road trip was that we kept framing it as ‘we’re on the Amazing Race; we need to get to the next checkpoint,’ so even when we were getting tired or stressed, we refocused and kept going. It’s Dom’s dream to be on the Amazing Race, but frankly, it’s my nightmare. But I’m sure one day I’ll cave and we’ll apply because Dom deserves to live his dream.
ANYWAY, the drive was fairly smooth; we only had to make a few stops along the way and get through a torrential downpour—just regular driving stuff. We drove 13.5 hours the first day, which landed us in Albany, NY, where we stayed at a hotel for the night. Abby famously hates long drives and tries to protest them by standing up the entire time. Thankfully, we’ve done this drive enough times that she’s finally figured out how much nicer it is to lay down. Although she absolutely detested our new screen divider, designed specifically to keep snoots from prying into the driver’s business. Abby was being EXTREMELY dramatic about it, as seen below. She usually likes to lay down and rest her long snoot on Dom’s shoulder for support, so she was very confused about who was supposed to hold her snoot for the drive if there was a giant mesh screen in her way.
The hotel was great, except for the part where both dogs wanted to sleep in the bed. Cue Dom on the couch and me wedged between two butts for the majority of the night. Unfortunately, (but not surprisingly) not much sleep was had by the humans. It’s also important to note that both dogs had minor cuts before our trip, so don’t be alarmed by the bandages. They were just a precaution to keep the girls from licking their wounds during the drive.
We quickly packed up and drove the remaining 4.5 hours to our destination without a hitch. When we arrived, we had a little Silken Windhound reunion with Cleo’s best friend Fiadh and her little sister Yumi. IT LITERALLY MAKES ME CRY EVERY TIME; THEY ARE ALL SO CUTE TOGETHER. We gave the girls some downtime to settle in and adjust to their new surroundings. Abby takes a while to relax after a drive, so we wanted to make sure she was doing alright before diving into all the planned activities.
So far we’ve gone on three outings: to our favorite preserve, on a hike at a local state park, and to Abby’s favorite beach. Here are some recaps below:
We are doing an extended trip, so there will be many more dog outings to come.
Praise be the snoot 🙌
We need snoot lobster pics! 🦞
I’m glad you made it safely there with relatively no issues, except the window. 😬 It looks beautiful there, these videos made my day. Have fun! 😊
